Choosing the right neighbourhood shapes your whole life in Barcelona: your commute, your weekends, your children’s school run, even how quickly you make friends. Here is how I describe each area to clients.
Eixample: elegant and central
The grid of wide avenues and modernista buildings around Passeig de Gràcia. Eixample Dreta is grand and refined; Eixample Esquerra is a little more relaxed. Expect high ceilings, balconies and everything on your doorstep. Best for: professionals and couples who want to be central.
Gràcia: a village in the city
Small squares, independent shops, terraces and a strong local identity. Lively in the evenings, especially around Plaça del Sol. Best for: creatives, couples and families who love neighbourhood life.
Sarrià-Sant Gervasi: calm and green
Upper Barcelona: quieter streets, more space, gardens, and proximity to many of the city’s international schools. Sarrià still has its old village centre. Best for: families.
Pedralbes: the most exclusive
Villas and large apartments near the monastery and the university area, with excellent schools nearby. Best for: families and executives looking for space and privacy.
Poblenou: modern and by the sea
Former factories turned into lofts, tech offices and design studios, with the Rambla del Poblenou and the beach close by. Best for: tech professionals, remote workers and beach lovers.
El Born: historic and atmospheric
Medieval streets, Santa Maria del Mar, galleries, cocktail bars and Ciutadella Park. Beautiful, but busy and sometimes noisy. Best for: those who want to live in the middle of it all.
Sant Antoni: the local favourite
Centred on its renovated market and car-free “superilla” streets, with some of the city’s best cafés and restaurants. Best for: young professionals and foodies.
Poble-sec: great value near Montjuïc
Tapas on Carrer de Blai, quick access to Montjuïc’s parks and museums, and rents that are often more affordable than nearby areas. Best for: first-time movers on a budget.
Sant Cugat: just outside the city
Twenty-five minutes by train over the Collserola hills: houses with gardens, several international schools and a calmer pace. Best for: families who want more space.
Every neighbourhood has streets I would happily live on and streets I would avoid. In every relocation package, I start with a neighbourhood walk so you can feel the difference before you sign anything. See what’s available now or book a free call.
